Education Programs

WAMSI will address educational opportunities at the postgraduate level in a program that will be coordinated by the participating tertiary institutions [University of Western Australia, Curtin, Murdoch & Edith Cowan University] working where appropriate with State and Federal Government agencies to ensure significant exposure to the workplace and take advantage of the skills and experience in those agencies. Initially, the focus will be local, driven by the increasing need for appropriately trained people within the expanding Western Australian marine industry and research sector.

It is envisaged that postgraduate students will be based in each of the six Research Nodes of WAMSI. WAMSI aims to place Western Australian universities collectively at the forefront of marine science tertiary education. This development will over time see Western Australia, through WAMSI, recognised as an icon of excellence in the delivery of tertiary education in the marine sciences and engineering in Australia, South-East Asia and the Indian Ocean Rim.

The marine environment is complex and marine science embraces many disciplines, including biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics and physics, focusing on the investigation of natural phenomena in the ocean. Hence, a well-defined multi-disciplinary approach is required, requiring a range of marine science graduate and postgraduate research.

WAMSI’s vision for marine science education involves collaboration between each of the four State universities (Curtin, Edith Cowan University, Murdoch and The University of Western Australia). This includes the joint supervision of postgraduate students and the identification early of post-doctoral opportunities in marine science.

Postgraduate scholarships will be offered to support research students working within the Research Nodes. Advantage will be taken of the collaborative environment within the Research Nodes to make optimal use of joint supervision and secondment of research students to non-university research facilities.

Postgraduate scholarship opportunities will be advertised in the national press and on the WAMSI website.
