Broke inlet is a relatively remote area 400km south of Perth, located in the South West of Western Australia between Augusta and Albany.  The nearest major town, Manjimup, is situated 100km north and the small coastal settlement Windy Harbour approximately 30km west of Broke Inlet.  The Inlet is entirely surrounded by the D’Entrecasteaux National Park, which is accessible via a sealed road and attracts limited ‘through-traffic’ to the area.

The marine environment off Broke is one fairly untouched by major tourism pressures and thus this location was selected due to its relative inaccessibility.

UPDATE:

The hydroacoustic and towed video surveys are complete for the Broke study location. Using these two data sets the spatial modelling team have now modelled over 140 square kilometres, developing full coverage maps for this site (as illustrated in Google Earth picture right). Following the development of the habitat maps, the team have now analysed biodiversity information collected from 150 baited camera (BRUV) drops.

Please see the data downloading website (www.marinefutures.info) for the finished outputs from this study location . In addition to the Mapping, Biodiversity and Human Use team reports for the whole project, each location also has a selection of google earth maps, educational underwater clips and easy-to-use interactive excel charts (such as the example right) which combine the spatial and biodiversity information.
